Linus Torvalds is an especially unique software developer, boasting over ten major awards from the internet and social welbeing sectors alike, and wielding thrice recurring recognition from Time magazine.
The reasoning for many of these awards were, on the surface level, allocated to his development of the Linux kernel, however, they all have foundations in Linus's primary belief: the necessity of open-source software.
He advocates for OSS in numerous ways, such as inspiring projects like Kubernetes and Firefox, and welcoming an open, transparent, and inclusive communication style with the online community. However, his, arguable second-most, notable contribution to the realm of OSS, is his development of the Git version control system. Git allows developers from across the globe to contribute to projects in an effective and transparent manner, making OSS much greater and more achievable.

However, his most notable achievement, the advancement that pushed his name into computer systems across the globe, is his development of the Linux kernel. Linus used an early version of the GNU project in order to develop the first edition of the kernel, later switching to a public license.

Linux is an open-source operating system, allowing anyone to utilize, modify, or redistribute the original code written by Linus in 1991. Almost 1000 Linux "distros", or distributions (modified editions of the original operating system), exist; each one is tailored for a specific usecase, audience, or even aesthetic.
