Hokkaido

Overview

Hokkaido is the northernmost of the four main islands in Japan. Hokkaido is the second largest island in Japan. Some major cities of Hokkaido are Sapporo, Hakodate, Otaru and Asahikawa. Hokkaido is home to the Seikan Tunnel that connects Hokkaido to Honshu, the mainland.

Sapporo

Sapporo is the capital of Hokkaido. It is located on the Ishikari River. Hokkaido’s population is about 2 million people. Sapporo is a popular spot in Japan for winter sports. Sapporo hosted the Winter Olympics in 1972.

Hakodate

Hakodate is located in southern Hokkaido on the Tsugaru Strait. The population of Hakodate is estimated to be about 240,000 people. In 1789 it was made Japan's spot for deep sea fishing. The Seikan Tunnel is located in Hakodate linking Hokkaido to Honshu the Mainland. The Hakodate Morning Market is a great seafood destination in Hokkaido.

Otaru

Otaru is located on the Ishikari Bay. Otaru is the largest industrial and commercial city of the west coast of Hokkaido. Otaru has a population of about 100,000 people. The Otaru canal is the city's most visited attraction.

Asahikawa

Asahikawa is located in northwest Hokkaido. The population of Asahikawa is 321,906 people. Asahikawa is located in the Kamikawa Basin, an agriculturally important basin. Asahikawa became the railway, marketing, and industrial centre for northern Hokkaido.
