The Person Behind This Website

About Me

Hello! My name is Shengkai Huang and I am a dual enrollment student. I am taking this course because I have been building websites for quite a while with various tools, but I never properly learned the basics of HTML CSS.

The Midterm Experience

Creating this axolotl website for my midterm has been both challenging and rewarding. The most challenging aspect was making a cohesive color palette that effectively represented the aquatic nature of axolotls while maintaining good contrast and readability. This took me a while, because I am not a very artistic person. Working with CSS selectors to target specific elements was time consuming and required careful planning, especially when applying styles to nested elements.

Another challenge was envisioning how my website was going to look. It took more planning than I thought, and quite a bit of revisioning.

What Surprised Me

The most surprising thing I discovered while researching axolotls was their regenerative abilities! I did not know that they could regrow limbs and even parts of their brain, spinal cord, and even heart tissue. This makes them incredibly valuable for scientific research.

I was also surprised to learn how critically endangered they are in the wild. Despite being popular as pets and in laboratories, their natural habitat in Lake Xochimilco has been reduced dramatically. It made me realize how important conservation efforts are, even for species that seem common in captivity.
