About the Quokka

The Quokka is a small animal, often about the size of a pet cat. Quokkas are marsupials, like:

Quokkas are native to Southwest Australia and are considered vulnerable under the IUCN criteria. Quokkas are largely nocturnal animals, so they sleep during the day. Their favorite place to do so is in the Acanthocarpus bush. These bushes are the perfect hiding spot for quokkas because other animals don't like how prickly it is.

Origin of "Quokka"

The name "quokka" is thought to come from a Noongar word. The Noongar are a group of Aboriginal Austrailians that also originated from the southwestern reigon of Australia.

What a Quokka Eats

Quokkas, like other marsupials, mainly eat vegetation. This includes grasses, shrubbage, leaves and more. Quokkas are very dependent on water, and find most of their freshwater through the vegetation that they eat. There are limited sources of freshwater in their habitat and get very limited rainfall as well. Human food is very unhealthy for Quokkas, it can cause illness that has been transmitted and severe dehydration.
