A Yellow Lab in her natural habitat

Origin and Basic Facts

Labrador Retrievers often called simply Labradors or Labs, are a popular breed of dog orginally bred in the United Kingdom.
They are a breed of the Canus Famililiaris species commonly kept by humans as pets. They were bread from Saint Johns Water Dog, a breed imported from the Newfoundland region of Canada and are named for the Labrador region of that country. While they don't have a natural habitat, this can be considered their land of origin
There is little sexual dimorphism in height as both males and females grow between 21 and 23 inches in height. However, males can grow to between 65 and 80 lb, about 10 lbs more than females.

Labrador Retrievers have the following colors of fur

  1. Black
  2. Brown (Often referred to as chocolate)
  3. Yellow (Often referred to as white)

Relationship with Humans

Labradors are famously friendly (though they have been known to unrepentently steal pastrami sandwiches). As their name suggests, Labradors are able retreivers and have often been used to assist hunters. They are particulary good at receiving items in the water. They are known to be attentive to humans and thus have a high reported success rate as guard dogs. They are the most common breed to be used as guard dogs. A lab named Endel from the United Kingdom reportedly was even trained to cover its owner with a blanket and assist with calling emergency authorities. As pets, labradors are among the most popular dogs in the world. Their common diet is dog food and they will hunt for anything available or what falls on the floor.
