WELCOME TO THE CHAMELEON WORLD
(Scientific Name: Chamaeleonidae)

Green Horned Chameleon

CHAMELEON HABITATS

Chameleons inhabit diverse environments across warm regions, with about half of all species native to Madagascar and the rest in:
+ MAINLAND AFRICA +
+ SOUTHERN EUROPE +
+ THE MIDDLE EAST +
+ SOUTHERN ASIA +
+ ISLANDS LIKE SRI LANKA +

Habitats include:
RAINFORESTS | SAVANNAHS | DESERTS | SCRUBLANDS | MONTANE FORESTS

CHAMELEON FACTS

+ Over 200 Chameleon species exist worldwide

+ 37% of all species are threatened with extinction as of 2022

+ Chameleons originated in Mainland Africa

CHAMELEON LIFE

Chameleons are adapted for arboreal life:
- Five toes are grouped (three and two) to grasp branches like thumbs.
- A prehensile tail wraps around branches (non-regenerative).
Chameleons thrive in warm climates (70–90°F) with vegetation, sun, and shade for thermoregulation.

CONSERVATION EFFORTS

Habitat destruction ( such as logging, clearing for agriculture) threatens Chameleons, pushing species toward extinction.

HUNTING TECHNIQUES

Their hunting style is stealthy: perched motionless, they scan with independently moving eyes, then fire their ballistic tongues to snag insects.

Chameleons are primarily insectivores, feasting on crickets, grasshoppers, and locusts, though larger species may eat small birds or lizards.
