WHERE IS HOME FOR THE CHAMELEON?:

*Chameleons are found in Africa, Asia, and Europe, but most live in Madagascar and Africa.

*The rest are found in the Middle East, a few on islands in the Indian Ocean, and one, the Indian chameleon, in India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.

*The common chameleon, is native to Spain, Portugal, the islands in the Mediterranean Sea, and the Near East.Introduced, non-native populations are found in Hawaii and Florida.

*Chameleons live in a variety of habitats, from rainforests and lowlands to deserts, semi-deserts, scrub savannas, and even mountains.

WEATHER PATTERNS IN THE CHAMELEON HABITAT:

The tropics are the regions of Earth surrounding the Equator
where the sun may shine directly overhead
Due to the overhead sun, the tropics receive the most solar energy over the course of the year
and consequently have the highest temperatures on the planet.
The tropics maintain wide diversity of local climates
such as rain forests, monsoons, savannahs, deserts, and high altitude snow-capped mountains.
The word "tropical" can specifically refer to certain kinds of weather
rather than to the geographic region

CHAMELEON CLASSIFICATION:

*The typical chameleons from the subfamily Chamaeleoninae are arboreal, (usually living in trees or bushes)

*A few species are partially or largely terrestrial.

*Terrestrial animals are animals that live predominantly or entirely on land.

*Namaqua chameleons live in Africa’s Namib Desert, where they dig holes in sand dunes to escape the extreme heat and cold.

*Sail-fin chameleons inhabit the montane forests of Cameroon, in West Africa, where mountains rise to cloud level and are shrouded in fog; it is a cool, wet, dripping place of little sun.
